Pride for me is being able to live as your authentic self. To be proud of what you undertake, who you cherish, all of it. To be confident of being one-of-a-kind and bringing that to every situation, every person you meet and into your whole experience. It allows you to be confident and to dwell your life fully without having to hide anything about who you are. When I was growing up, entity gay wasn’t something you talked about. You might notice whispers about someone, but you never really discussed out in the uncover. When I was younger, like in high school or college, you just didn’t talk about it. Your personal life was your personal life; you didn’t share about that. It was kind of a private thing.
Because of that, for me coming out wasn’t a one-time thing. It was more of a process. Over the years I had a curiosity but also a hesitation. I went to college and still dated guys but always had this curiosity. When I finally had an trial, it was a little bit of a “ding, ding, ding,” but I was still a bit guarded. When I was growing up being gay wasn’t understood or as accepted and I had a lot of inner struggles. So, coming out for me was a process of becoming comfortable and confident to be a
Pride to me is the vacuum to be your authentic self. That’s one of the things I’m most proud about in the WNBA and it’s always been this way. I didn’t really realize it when I first got in the WNBA, but I came out of college athletics. And college athletics is so anti everything that the WNBA is, so I lived a very closeted experience for fear of it creature used against me in ways that would affect my occupation. When you get in the WNBA, there’s this freedom, this liberation that you finally become to be yourself. It’s not something you have to anxiety. As I got older, I realized that being yourself is the most important thing you can do to teach others that being gay isn’t a problem. Normalizing that for those around me helped them receive that for me in this space that it wasn’t about being gay. It was about who I am as a person. And so, pride for me is exactly that: I get to be my original self at all times.
I arrive from a generation where we don’t talk about things. When I think about my generation and generations before me, there were ways in which we weren’t able to live as our true selves. I assess one of the most complex things to experience

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Seimone Augustus has always preferred to linger out of the widespread eye even as her basketball career has taken her to the heights of an Olympic gold medal and a WNBA championship.
With her adopted residence state of Minnesota considering a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, the Lynx star is now becoming a vocal proponent of equal rights for gays.
After all, she has her own wedding coming up, to longtime girlfriend LaTaya Varner.
“I felt like it was the perfect time for me, being on a platform where I can create a change with my voice and my situation,” Augustus told The Connected Press. “Maybe inspire someone else to come out and be comfortable with themselves.
