Lisbon’s gay beaches

In just a not many weeks Sergio and I will pack up for a very quick trip to Portugal (our first time there). Provided that the weather is nice, I’d like to spend a morning at a gay-friendly beach to soak up some Portuguese heat.  There seem to be two options recommended for gay travelers.

Have you been before? Which beach should we visit?

Costa da Caparica is described as a famous beach near Lisbon. From what I have read on the web if we go here we should head to the southern portion of the beach which is described as “trendier and less crowded” — which I take as  gay code for better looking people and no children.  It sounds enjoy this is also more active in the afternoon and one website suggested we enjoy cocktails and the nightlife the village has to offer.

Beach 19 is the other option, located at the south end of Praia de Bela Vista. This is a clothing optional beach which isn’t exactly a draw for me but it isn’t something that would deter me from going either. However, the reviews for this beach which I think is a bit further away from Libson appear mixed.

I’m curious if any of my readers have been to

If you want to escape the hassle and the heat of Lisbon on a hot summer morning, try the beaches of Costa da Caparica, just across the Tejo river. Locals swarm to the village of Caparicabut just away from the village, tens of kilometres of white, unspoilt beaches are at your disposal!

Transpraia train

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Transpraia was taken out of service in 2020. Portugal.com:  BRING BACK THE BEACH TRAIN

UPDATE August 20, 2024: Well-known Transpraia da Caparica was bought by a French investor and may resume connection soon 🙂 🙂

The Costa da Caparica beach drill stopped running in 2020 but the business was bought by a French investor. Next year the connection between Costa da Caparica and Fonte da Telha may give back, with official authorizations still lacking (SIC NOTICIAS)

The best beaches are Morena and Sereia, surrounded by dunes and with good bars. At almost every end there’s a beachclub and the further south you move, the more you have the place to yourself.

Praia 19 Gay Beach

Beach 19 is said to be Europe's largest gay beach

With dunes rising up from the sea to sandstone cliffs in the distance, this is largely considered Europe’s most beautiful (and largest) gay beach.

Beach 19 is an official nude beach

It’s been established as a “gay beach” since the 1990s, but it’s been attracting same-sex attracted men since the 1980s, when this stretch of the Caparica coast became a secluded beach where nude sunbathing was tolerated (it was declared an official nude beach in 1995).

Dunes and protected sandstone cliffs face the beach

The seclusion has a price -- there are no facilities of any kind -- for bathrooms and places to eat you have to walk for about 10-to-20 minutes to the north or south. This is a protected area, so development is restricted, interpretation you shouldn’t expect to ever find a Mykonos-type club or hotels.

This is a deserted beach -- for facilities you have to walk to the neighboring beach of Fonte da Telha

The name derives from the number signposted by the train tracks behind it, indicating the stop of the tourist train that connects the beaches of Costa da Caparica from June to September.
