Grease curse left cast and crew plagued by freak accidents, drug addiction and death

Feel-good family movie Grease changed the lives of its cast forever, but many were haunted by tragedy for years afterwards

Grease remains one of the most popular films to have approach out during the 1970s, propelling its stars to a whole new level of fame.

However, in the years after the film's 1978 release, whispers of a curse began circulating after so many of the cast, crew and production team were struck down by tragedy.

The latest depressed news to materialize is the death of actor Edd Byrnes, who played Vince Fontaine in the hit film musical, who has died unexpectedly aged 87.

His death is the latest in a long line of tragedies that have struck those who worked on Grease since its blockbuster box office days.

It's not only affected the feature - the curse is said to have struck the threatre show too with the most notable incident coming in 2007 with a freak onstage accident.

We’re racing for pinks.

There is oddly petite in cyber territory about Dennis C. (which stood for Cleveland) Stewart, with the unfortunate complexion. He was top known as “Crater face” in the movie Grease, though in billing and retrospect he is always referred to as “Leo, Head of the Scorpions”. The IMDB has very little as adequately, except for the all too significant fact that he was a dancer in one of my favorite (and universally panned) films, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He was billed as a dancer, which is very uncharacteristic of the Crater face we comprehend, but then I guess that’s why they call it acting.

What prompted my interest in Dennis was Frenchy’s Grease Scrapbook, which I am a proud owner of. Didi Conn (the chick I invited to my prom), wrote her book of memories, and the only mention of Dennis was in the posthumous bit just mentioning that he died.

I met and interviewed Eddie Deezen who played Eugene, and he told me that Dennis would provide him a journey to the take a photo every day, which I thought was nice. Here is the interesting bit: As I comprehend it, Eddie Deezen

Is Grease cursed? The ill fortune that's plagued the film's stars

It has catchy songs, groovy dance routines and sizzling Summer Loving – movies don’t approach much more feelgood than Grease.

But while Sandy and Danny’s love story has a fairytale ending, what befell the film’s stars has been far from happy ever after.

In evidence, there has been so much turmoil, heartache and tragedy for many of those involved in the making of the 1978 musical, Grease is said to be cursed. And the latest victim is Jeff Conaway, better acknowledged as T-Birds leader Kenickie. He is fighting for his life after mysteriously tumbling down a flight of stairs at his Los Angeles home.

The “curse” has also hit the film’s leads, John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. And it even extends to stage productions. In a 2007 theatre version, Jim Bakkum and Bettina Holwerda were injured in a freak accident.

During a scene at a drive-in the convertible they were sat in suddenly plunged into the orchestra pit. Jim was concussed while Bettina broke her arm.

So is Grease cursed? Here’s the compelling evidence...

Playing Kenickie made Jeff a household name. But it was also the initiate of a downward spiral which

Grease is the curse

TEEN musical Grease is a feelgood classic – but the cast of the 1978 film have since led anything but fairytale lives.

Away from the hit’s upbeat tunes and 1950s tale of US high-school romance, they have faced serial tragedies. The most recent centres on Olivia Newton-John, who played Sandy to John Travolta’s heart-throb Danny.

A man doing work at the star’s home in Florida committed suicide by shooting himself in the head on Monday, cops said yesterday.

Here DULCIE PEARCE looks at the other misfortunes to befall Olivia and her Grease co-stars.

Cancer/deaths

SINCE slipping on those famous skin-tight disco pants to sing You’re The One That I Want, Aussie-born Olivia has racked up a string of flop films.

She also opened retail chain Koala Cobalt , selling Australian fashion and groceries in the US, only for the company to file for bankruptcy in 1991.

Two weeks after her father died of cancer in 1992, Olivia was also diagnosed with the killer disease — and needed a partial mastectomy.

Her 11-year marriage to US actor and dancer Matt Lattanzi came crashing down in 1995.
