Christian Borle brought along a lot of first-hand experience when he was cast as composer Tom Levitt on NBC’s Smash, a television show about the making of a Broadway musical.
Borle, 38, was nominated for a Tony Award for Legally Blonde and has appeared in the Broadway musicals Mary Poppins, Spamalot and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
‘This is my first TV experience and I’m excited and I’m very happy,’ the actor says. ‘We are lucky.’
While he is unbent in real life, Borle has had no problem playing a gay character on Smash which airs on Monday nights on NBC and has benefited greatly from a time slot that follows the ratings hit The Voice.
‘Coming from the theater, all my best friends are gay,’ Borle says. ‘It was essential for me to know what [writers] wanted to do and how was this going to be different from what we’ve already seen.’

Christian Borle stars as Jim Bakker in Tammy Faye on Broadway at the Palace Theatre.
Christian Dominique Borle is a two-time Tony Award-winning actor and Broadway favorite, who was born on October 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the city’s famed School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University, graduated in 1995, and moved to New York City.
After appearing in a German production of The Who’s Tommy and a National Tour of West Side Story, Borle made his Broadway debut, appearing as Willard Hewitt in the 1998 Broadway adaptation of Footloose. He went on to join the ensembles of the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and the short-lived 2002 musical Amour. His first starring role was as Jimmy Smith in the Broadway premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2003, succeeding original cast member Gavin Creel. Next, he played several roles in Monty Python’s Spamalot, starred as Emmett Forrest in Legally Blonde (earning his first Tony nomination in 2007), and took over as Bert in Mary Poppins in October 2009.
In 2010, he starred as Prior Walter in the off-Broadway revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on Nation Until he landed a starring role on NBC’s Smash, Christian Borle was best recognizable to television audiences as the guy from that eBay commercial (he crooned “That’s on eBay” to the tune of “That’s Amore”). But theatergoers contain been admiring his work for more than a decade. A versatile stage performer, the 38-year-old made his specify with goofy turns in the musicals Spamalot and Thoroughly Modern Millie (opposite his now ex-wife, Sutton Foster), and then graduated to straight romantic direction in Legally Blonde, which earned him a Tony nod. Last season, he tackled two remarkably different characters back-to-back Off Broadway: AIDS-stricken Prior Walter in the Signature’s lauded revival of Angels in America, and campy villain Ebony Stache in the kinetic Peter and the Starcatcher. (The play-with-music by Rick Elice was adapted from Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s young-adult novel about Peter Pan’s preliminary years.) With Smash picked up for a second season, Borle is using the downtime to reprise his role in the Broadway transfer of Starcatcher. TONY spoke with the actor about his career, why he always plays gay and how he deals with online gossip. SmaQ&A: Christian Borle
