A history of widespread homophobia has deterred more than a few gays from vacationing in the Caribbean, so I wasn’t sure what to anticipate when I was invited to review the Grand Lucayan resort in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

However, after experiencing a surprising level of acceptance for the LGBT community on a recent trip to Aruba I was hoping my latest Caribbean voyage would provide more of the same.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Over a four-day period I discovered several reasons why the Grand Lucayan is considered a destination unto itself—and one gay travelers shouldn’t overlook.

The white-sand beaches and pristine surroundings of the Bahamas have uplifted it to one of the top gay holiday destinations in the Caribbean. The locals might not be familiar with the gay lifestyle yet, however travellers hardly even notice it.

The Bahamas' Gay Community is still 'in the closet', so the gay-only places are hidden and tough to find. There is actually an underground "gay" scene in Nassau, that comprises of gay-popular places, frequented by gay people.
