What is the Oldest Gay Block in the United States?
To answer this question we must not only make some fairly arbitrary rules about what constitutes a single bar (e.g. what kinds of name changes, changes of location, or temporary closures matter?), but also what really constitutes a "gay bar." To age a gay bar, I think the following ground rules make sense:
- A "gay bar" does not merely accept the occasional one or few lgbtq+ customers; it must cater primarily to LGBT patrons, and/or a majority of patrons must be gay, during some regular portion of business hours.
- If a bar was established as a straight bar and eventually changed to a gay focus or hangout, the age of the "gay bar" should be based on the years it has catered to gay patrons, not the date that the (straight) bar was founded.
With these rules in mind, I consider the the oldest male lover bar in the U.S. to be the White Horse Prevent in Oakland, California. For at least a few decades I the title probably belonged to the "Double Header" in Seattle, Washington. But this bar closed on Dec 31, 2015, and it is not at all clear that it really merited a description as a homosexual bar over the last three decades. If you cons
One of New York City's oldest lgbtq+ bars designated as individual landmark
WEST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission voted on Tuesday to designate Julius' Bar in the Village as an individual landmark.
The lock on 10th Road has been in business since the 1860s and played an important role in the battle for civil rights for the LGBTQ community.
In the 1960s, the state liquor authority did not allow people to be served alcohol if they were openly gay.
"In 1966, we had something called the sip-in," Julius' Bar manager Nick Gabriellini said. "Where the express liquor authority didn't allow homosexuals to be served alcohol if they were openly gay. So, they staged the sip-in here, and there was a lawsuit."
The sip-in and lawsuit, even before the Stonewall uprising around the corner, would help convert New York law.
"The 'Sip-In' at Julius' was a crucial moment in our city and our nation's LGBTQ+ history, and this designation today marks not only that moment but also Julius' half-century as a home for Brand-new York City's Queer community," said Fresh York City Mayor Eri

I know it’s been enjoy a really long moment — sorry about that! My real life career got absolutely crazy and hasn’t calmed down at all. May not ever calm down but I’m handling the craziness greater now that I’m compassionate of getting used to it. So….we’re back with even more queer history!
Chances are pretty good, if you’re an LGBTQIA+ person you’ve been to a gay bar. Even if you’re just someone who loves an LGBTQIA+ person, there’s still a fine chance you’ve been to a gay bar. I’m not saying you’re doing queerness wrong if you haven’t been to a gay bar, I’m just saying it’s a beautiful common shared experience. It’s true that bars existence basically the central gathering place for our group isn’t without drawbacks — although, personally, I adoration them. But I’m not here to weigh the pros and cons of gay bars — we can all do that on Twitter (and we do) — I just want to talk briefly about the history of gay bars, talk a teeny bit about some of the first ones to exist, and some of the oldest ones that we still possess today. A lot of these places will h
